In India, the Engineers’ Day is celebrated on September 15 every year. It is actually the birth anniversary of the great Indian engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (also spelled as Vishweshwaraya). Born in 1860, he was a scholar, statesman, and the Diwan of Mysore, and received India’s highest honor Bharat Ratna in 1955.
Do you know who was M Visvesvaraya? If you don’t know about him, let us tell you. He was a civil engineer who graduated from the College of Engineering in Pune. After some years, he became the chief designer of the flood protection system of Hyderabad in Telangana, and chief engineer of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore.
Moreover, he also played an important role in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion. In his lifetime, he played a vital role in founding The Mysore Soap Factory, The Mysore Iron & Steel Works in Bhadravathi, The Parasitoide Laboratory, The Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute, The Bangalore Agricultural University, The State Bank of Mysore, The Century Club, Mysore Chambers of Commerce, University Visvesvaraya college of Engineering, Bangalore and many other industrial ventures.
